MAHALANGUR HIMAL · 28° N
ABOVE THE SNOW LINE.
NOTHING SHOULD BE WALKING UP HERE.
01 · THE PLACE
ALTITUDE TAKES THINGS IN ORDER.
Appetite. Then sleep. Then judgement. Then strength. It is the most efficient machine on earth for finding out what a person actually is.
THE SNOW LINE
Snow stops melting. Trees stop. Then grass, then everything that needed grass. What is left is rock, ice and weather.
THE DEATH ZONE
A third the oxygen. The body cannot adapt here, only spend. Judgement goes first. Strength goes last. Nothing stays.
PRINTS
In fresh snow, at 21,000 feet, where the ground has been empty for four million years. Too large. Walking upright.
02 · THE RECORD
A HUNDRED YEARS. NOT ONE PHOTOGRAPH.
1921. The first party sent to find a route, not to climb one. They were surveying approaches when they crossed a line of prints on a glacier where nothing lives. The guides were not surprised. They already had a word for it. Every expedition since has come back with the same tracks and the same missing photograph.
03 · THE PATTERN
EVERY ACCOUNT SAYS THE SAME THREE THINGS.
A hundred years of sightings from people who never met, in a place with nothing to compare notes about. The stories should not match. They do.
THE TRACKS ARE ALWAYS FRESH
No body. No bone. No den. Only prints, and always recent, as though it had gone by a few minutes earlier and would be back.
THE DESCRIPTION NEVER VARIES
Upright. Heavy. Unhurried. Comfortable in conditions that are emptying out the person watching. They describe it the way you describe something you recognise.
IT COMES AT THE WORST HOUR
Never at noon in good weather. It is seen in whiteout, on the eighth day, when a party has stopped being able to think. Draw your own conclusion.
04 · THE RANGE
FOUR EVERY DAY. FOUR WHEN THE DAY ASKS.
Each one is a numeral, a state, a landform and a colour. The split is not a marketing decision. It is how they empty.
THE DAILY FOUR
WAKE at the departure. ALTITUDE on the ridge. QUIET in the gap. DEN in the tent. Taken every day, so the four tins empty together and land again as one thing. Sold as THE CACHE.
THE OCCASIONAL FOUR
THAW on the descent. RUT in the season. COAT for slow growth. ORE for the baseline. Taken when the day asks for them, so they are sold on their own.
A STRIP, NOT A PILL
Under the tongue, gone in five minutes, no water. A supplement you do not take is worth nothing. This one leaves you no excuse.
IT HAS ALREADY SEEN YOU.
UPGRADE THE ANIMAL.
THE DAY, two tins, $69. THE CACHE, four, $129. THE EXPEDITION, all eight, $249. That is $34.50, $32.25 and $31.12 a tin.
